Charlotte turned up the volume as historically Black colleges and universities from across the country gathered for the Big HBCU Southern Classic Battle of the Bands at Bojangles Coliseum. The high-energy event featured marching bands representing several HBCUs and brought thousands of fans together to celebrate music, culture, and school pride.

In total, 10 HBCU marching bands performed during the showcase, delivering powerful drumlines, elaborate halftime-style routines, and signature sounds that are a hallmark of HBCU band culture. The performances turned the coliseum into a lively atmosphere filled with music, dancing, and spirited competition among the participating schools.

Charlotte’s own Johnson C. Smith University marching band was among the featured performers, representing the city as bands from across the country traveled to take part in the event. Organizers said the competition was designed not just to entertain but also to highlight the legacy and cultural significance of HBCU marching bands.

Event leaders also emphasized the educational impact of band programs, noting that many students receive scholarships through music programs at HBCUs. Organizers hope the showcase will inspire young people to consider joining band programs and pursuing higher education at historically Black colleges and universities.

The celebration included additional activities such as a fan fest with food trucks, vendors, and college recruiters, giving high school students an opportunity to connect with HBCU representatives and learn more about educational opportunities.

Overall, the Big HBCU Southern Classic Battle of the Bands highlighted the powerful tradition, talent, and cultural pride that HBCU marching bands bring to communities across the country while turning Charlotte into a hub of music and celebration for the weekend.
