Saturday marks three years since a shooting on the UNC Charlotte campus took the lives of two students and injured four others.
The school and the entire community will come together Friday and Saturday to remember Riley Howell and Reed Parlier.
It was the Kennedy building where a student opened fire inside a classroom on April 30, 2019, killing Howell and Parlier and injuring those four other students. It was a day that rocked the campus and community to its core.
Friday evening at 5:40 p.m., two wreaths – one for Howell and one for Parlier – will be placed in front of the Kennedy building and remain there for 24 hours.
It’s one of several events scheduled over the next 24 hours to honor the students and remember what it means to be Charlotte Strong.
Howell, of Waynesville, and Parlier, of Midland, died that day in 2019 but the campus continues to honor their lives and remember their sacrifice.
In addition to the wreath ceremony, there will be a memorial dedication ceremony at 12:15 p.m. Friday in the Botanical Gardens. There is also a challenge for students to run, walk or jog 4.9 miles, as well as a community art mural and a yoga and mindfulness session.
UNCC has also set up a digital exhibit online that is full of pictures, videos, letters and other remembrances.
The exhibit highlights how the campus, the community and the nation grieved in the weeks, months and years that have followed that dark day three years ago.
