American Airlines resumed flights Tuesday evening after a technology outage temporarily brought departures across the country to a halt, creating delays for travelers nationwide.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a nationwide ground stop for American Airlines and its regional partners around 6:30 p.m. ET on July 28 as the carrier dealt with a systemwide IT issue. The restriction prevented affected flights from departing while crews worked to restore the airline’s systems.
The disruption was relatively brief, with the ground stop lifted by approximately 7:18 p.m. ET after systems began coming back online. American Airlines said operations were resuming and apologized to passengers affected by the outage.
Despite the quick recovery, the interruption contributed to a difficult day of air travel. About 1,100 American Airlines flights were delayed and 221 were canceled, according to flight-tracking data reported by Reuters. Severe thunderstorms affecting several East Coast airports also contributed to travel disruptions.
Travelers flying American Airlines were encouraged to continue checking their flight status as the carrier worked through delays and other lingering effects from the outage.
