ATLANTA, GA — Legendary singer Gladys Knight is preparing to spend less time on the road as she begins a new chapter in her life and celebrated career.
The 82-year-old Atlanta native announced that she plans to gradually reduce the number of live performances she takes on. Rather than completely stepping away from music, Knight described the decision as a transition that will allow her to focus on other priorities and opportunities.
Knight indicated that the change will give her more time to pursue projects alongside her husband and spend time with their grandchildren while continuing to explore what comes next professionally.
The announcement marks another milestone in a career that has stretched across more than seven decades.
Known worldwide as the “Empress of Soul,” Knight first rose to prominence as the lead singer of Gladys Knight & the Pips. The group became one of the defining acts of its era, producing classics including “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Neither One of Us” and “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me.”
Knight later established a successful solo career and continued performing for audiences around the world. Over the course of her career, she has recorded dozens of albums and earned seven Grammy Awards, along with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and recognition as a Kennedy Center Honoree.
Although she plans to reduce her workload, Knight isn’t immediately leaving the stage. Several performances remain scheduled through the fall, meaning fans will still have opportunities to see the music icon perform live.
Knight also expressed appreciation for the generations of listeners who have supported her throughout her career and made it clear that she still expects to remain connected with her fans.
For one of Atlanta’s most accomplished musical exports, the announcement appears to be less of a farewell and more of a shift toward a slower pace — one that gives Knight additional time for family, new projects and whatever comes next.
