CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte is preparing to welcome some of gospel music’s biggest names as the Stellar Gospel Music Awards arrive in the Queen City for the first time, marking a major moment for both the city and the gospel music community.

Ahead of the celebration, gospel legends Kirk Franklin and Ricky Dillard spoke about their careers, their faith and the importance of using gospel music to connect with and uplift communities.

For Franklin, whose career has helped introduce contemporary gospel to generations of listeners, music has consistently been about more than awards and chart success. His work has blended traditional gospel influences with elements of R&B and hip-hop, helping expand the genre’s reach while keeping faith at the center of his message.

Dillard has also built a celebrated career through his distinctive choir-driven sound and energetic performances. His work with New G has made him one of gospel music’s recognizable choir leaders, and his influence continues to be felt by younger singers, musicians and worship leaders.

Their appearance comes as Charlotte takes center stage in the gospel world with the arrival of the Stellar Awards, an annual celebration recognizing achievements across gospel music. The event brings together established stars, emerging performers, industry professionals and fans for a weekend centered around the genre’s music and culture.

Hosting the awards in Charlotte for the first time also gives the Queen City another opportunity to showcase itself as a destination for major entertainment and cultural events.

Both Franklin and Dillard emphasized themes that have remained important throughout gospel music’s history: faith, purpose, service and community. Their perspectives highlight how artists can use their platforms not only to entertain audiences but also to encourage people and create connections beyond the stage.

As gospel artists and fans gather in Charlotte, this year’s Stellar Awards will celebrate both the genre’s current stars and the legacy that continues to influence gospel music today.

For Charlotte, the event represents more than another awards show coming to town. It is an opportunity for the city to welcome the gospel community while participating in a celebration of a genre deeply connected to Black music, culture and faith.
