Lionel Richie sparked a new conversation among R&B fans after using part of a recent concert to joke about Usher and Chris Brown, comparing their current stadium tour to the major tours his generation was putting together decades ago.
The legendary singer made the comments during his August 11 performance in Phoenix, Arizona, where he is currently touring alongside Earth, Wind & Fire. Richie brought up Usher and Brown’s massive co-headlining tour before reminding the audience that collaborations between major R&B acts are far from a new concept.
Richie pointed to his history with The Commodores and Earth, Wind & Fire as examples of artists who were bringing major R&B performances to audiences roughly four decades ago. He then added a joke referencing the legal troubles associated with younger entertainers, which quickly became the part of his comments that generated the most attention online.
The moment wasn’t limited to comparing touring eras. Richie also joked about how dramatically the entertainment business has changed with the arrival of platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. His comments highlighted the difference between an era when artists’ personal lives weren’t documented around the clock and today’s environment, where almost anything involving a celebrity can become public within minutes.
The timing makes the comments particularly interesting because Usher and Chris Brown are currently sharing the stage on a major North American stadium tour. The two R&B superstars launched the run earlier this summer, bringing together decades of hits and two of the genre’s most recognizable performers.
While Richie’s remarks generated debate over whether he was seriously criticizing the two singers or simply having fun with the audience, Chris Brown appeared to take the moment lightly. A subsequent report said Brown responded on social media with laughter rather than turning the comments into a feud.
The exchange ultimately highlights several generations of R&B success. Richie and his contemporaries helped establish the blueprint for large-scale R&B performances, while Usher and Brown are demonstrating that today’s R&B stars can still command some of the biggest venues in North America.
Rather than developing into a serious musical rivalry, the moment appears to be another example of generational competition and playful trash talk between some of R&B’s biggest names.
