North Carolina legislative leaders have reached a long-awaited agreement on a new state budget, ending months of negotiations between House and Senate Republicans. Lawmakers are expected to vote on the spending plan later this week, marking a significant step toward approving the state’s first comprehensive budget since 2023.
The proposed budget includes funding for state government operations, employee and teacher pay raises, infrastructure investments and other key priorities that have been the focus of lengthy negotiations. While legislative leaders have agreed on the framework, the budget must still be formally approved by both chambers before heading to Governor Josh Stein for consideration. If signed into law, the budget will take effect as North Carolina begins its new fiscal year.
The agreement brings North Carolina closer to resolving one of its most closely watched political issues after operating without a new comprehensive budget for an extended period. State leaders say the deal provides certainty for agencies, schools and public employees while allowing lawmakers to move forward with other legislative priorities during the remainder of the session.
