CHARLOTTE, NC — Traveling between Charlotte, Raleigh and other North Carolina cities just became easier for passengers who want to leave their cars behind.
NC By Train has launched its new Rail & Ride Pass, allowing eligible train passengers to connect with participating local buses and light rail systems at no additional cost.
The program is available to passengers traveling along the NC By Train corridor between Raleigh and Charlotte. Riders first purchase an eligible train ticket and then submit their trip information online to receive a Rail & Ride code by email.
In Charlotte, passengers can use the benefit with CATS buses and LYNX light rail. Riders redeem their emailed promotional code through the CATS-Pass app to receive an adult day pass for local bus and LYNX service.
The program also connects passengers with several transit systems across the Triangle and Piedmont regions, including GoTriangle, GoRaleigh, PART, Winston-Salem Transit Authority, High Point Transit and LINK Transit. Greensboro Transit Agency is scheduled to join the program October 1.
NCDOT says the goal is to make passenger rail more convenient by helping travelers continue their trip after stepping off the train without needing to drive, find parking or arrange another ride.
One important exception: Rail & Ride does not currently include transit connections in Kannapolis or Salisbury.
For Charlotte-area travelers heading to Raleigh for work, sporting events, festivals or weekend trips, the new program provides another option for making the entire journey using public transportation.
